Review journal entitled An
investigation of motivation in Childern’s Foreign Language Learning Process by Na
Wei, July 2016
Students
will study more actively and initiatively if they have a positive learning
motivation. If they don’t have any, they only study because of some external
factors.
Research for
students’ motivation in language learning must be done to make decisions about
instructional plans and teaching methods in English. Language teaching process
in order to encourage students’ motivation to learn. The investigation of child
students got five needs, there are safety need, belongingness and love need,
esteem need, apprehension need and the need for self-actualization in child
language learning which have not been satisfied enough. So, to get students
more motivated to involve in their classroom language learning, praise and
encouragement from the teachers are required and designs of question and
classroom tasks need more careful consideration.
There are three main causes of lack of motivation in children’s English Language Learning: lack of awareness of the value of English, Lack of interaction, lack of creative use of teaching materials.
Both teachers and parents have an important rule to develop awareness of language learning. Language especially English is used in our daily life. A lot of interesting books are written in English. The other thing that has to be considered is a pleasant and enjoyable environment that should be apply in the class. The last is teachers have to pay attention to the development of professional teaching. They need to concern about new teaching theories and teaching methodologies.
According to Vigotzky in constructive theory, students have their own resposibility to build their motivation to study. So, even the teachers have considered a pleasant and enjoyable environment in the class, but the students can’t build their own motivation to study English, the learning process will not run well.
If I apply
the result of this research in my class to build the students motivation in
learning English, such as make a pleasant and enjoyable environmet, learning
new theories and methodologies, etc. I believe that there will be a development
in students’ motivation to learn English. But the important thing that we have
to consider is the students have to build their own motivation in study.

HapusThanks for the comment Mia. Well, both teachers and parents have to work together to make an anjoyable learning environmet and can be inspiring teachers and parents for the child so they can build their own motivation to learn by themselves. I'm still finding as much as references that related to improve students' motivation. So if you have any, please share it to me....

BalasHapusI really agree with your perception in that one of the efforts to trigger students’ motivation is initiated by the teacher itself with learning more for teaching method mastery. You are a sort of a wise teacher whom students must be looking forward too. As a teacher fellow, I really support your idea. Keep up a good work “mbak”. Hehe
BalasHapusCurrently I have read a book introducing the idea of “post method in teaching English”. The writer, (Kumara: 2008) depicts the situation that EFL teachers in the world often make wrong choices about the teaching method they need to implement in the class to help facilitate English acquisition and enhance students’ motivation. He says the mistake is that the teachers commonly compare and take one best among teaching methods like some of them (GTM, CLT, Natural approach, Audio Lingual Method, Suggestopedia or others). He postulates that such those methods will construct a uniformity of language teaching. Whereas, one method can fit some students, but cannot fit other students from different schools or places. He emphasizes that English teachers in the world with their choice of method do not often meet the need of students so that students consequently become unmotivated.
Then I am curious about what method actually is from Kumara’s perception. I try to keep following his book, and I ultimately find what the concept of method he suggests. He postulates that what we can call a method is (learner centered, teaching centered, teacher centered, or other related terms).
Then I come back to view what I have done to serve students with my choice of teaching method, I feel guilty then because maybe I have wrongly chosen the teaching method which is not convenient to my students’ needs quite often.
Ya Allah... that’s why I love your perception in your journal review in that we as teachers have to also really consider what can enhance students’ learning motivation until they can be triggered to build their own motivation to learn. It is actually something that students really need.
Woooowww....It's a wonderfull comment Ruly. Thanks for sharing your experience, I will also find the book that you mentioned above...looks like it's a really good book for us as a teacher.
HapusWell, my interest now is to find out a good way to improve my student's motivation. The main point of a learning process is positive motivation right? So, if I can build it, the learning process will run well and the output also will be better.
Thanks Ruly ;)
